Sunset at Monoliths’ Beach – Work in progress II

Last Updated on July 22, 2014 by Patrick

Continuing with my composition and improving it. This is the second step I took, detailing it more. Nevertheless, I worked very little on the sky.

In my next installment of this “work in progress” series I will work on the sky more. In this one I gave it a path to follow for the final result.

There’s not much to explain what I did here. I’ve worked on the beach monoliths, refining them, giving them more texture. I’ve used various rock brushes in Photoshop with different opacities and flows. I’ve played with the contrast in this one. I like to have as much black and white in my compositions as possible, like I said in my previous post. It gives it a more contrasty look, which is exactly what I’m going for in this composition.

I’ve also played with classic Photoshop brushes, round ones, square ones, with different hardnesses, especially in the waves. I gave the waves more attention, as you can see, in this one. There isn’t much to do to finish the composition. So far I am pleased with the results, though I would improve the difference between the waves and the actual sunset.

Also, I have worked on the horizon. As you can see more rock compositional elements have been added and a hill crest in the upper center of the composition. I wanted to balance the scene better using another geological and geographical element and give it a sense of scale.

So, the leading lines go all towards the subject of the scene, the sunset. Also, the waves of the water go that way.

In the next part I shall concentrate, like I said, more on the sky part and a little on the elements that need to be finished in details.

So, check me out next time with my new result. Bye for now! ;)
