Un tanar medic din Tokyo, numit Kusuda, a intalnit un coleg de universitate, care avea ceva cunostinte de Zen si l-a intrebat ce este Zen.
– Nu pot sa-ti spun ce este. Stiu insa ca, daca intelegi filozofia Zen, nu-ti mai este frica de moarte.
– Interesant! Si unde pot gasi un maestru?
– Mergi la maestrul Nan-in.
Kusuda se duse sa-l caute pe Nan-in. Ca sa vada daca maestrul se teme de moarte, lua cu el un pumnal.
Cand Nan-in il vazu, exclama:
– Salut, prietene! Ce mai faci? Nu ne-am vazut de mult!
Aceasta primire il descumpani pe Kusuda, care raspunse:
– Nu ne-am mai vazut pana acum.
– Adevarat. Te-am confundat cu alt medic, care vine sa studieze cu mine.
Kusuda pierduse ocazia sa-l puna la incercare. Il intreba daca putea sa ia lectii despre Zen. Nan-in ii raspunse:
– Zen nu-i ceva dificil. Pentru ca esti medic, trateaza-ti pacientii cu bunatate. Asta inseamna Zen!
Kusuda se duse de trei ori la Nan-in, si de fiecare data Nan-in ii spuse acelasi lucru:
– Un medic nu trebuie sa-si piarda vremea cu mine. Du-te acasa si ai grija de pacientii tai.
Insa Kusuda nu intelegea cum ingrijirea bolnavilor poate sa inlature teama de moarte. Asa ca, odata, izbucni:
– Prietenul meu mi-a spus ca, atunci cand cineva intelege filozofia Zen, nu se mai teme de moarte. De cate ori am venit, mi-ai spus sa am grija de pacientii mei! Asta o stiam! Daca invatatura despre Zen se reduce la asta, e inutil sa mai vin la tine!
Nan-in zambi si-l batu pe umar:
– Am fost prea rigid cu tine… Iti voi da o problema.
Si-i propuse lui Kusuda sa studieze Mu a lui Joshu, prima problema din cartea numita Usa fara usa.
Kusuda medita doi ani asupra problemei despre Mu (nimic). In cele din urma, crezu ca a ajuns la un rezultat. Dar maestrul ii spuse:
– Inca n-ai ajuns unde trebuie…
Kusuda isi continua meditatia inca un an si jumatate. Mintea ii deveni senina. Rezolva. Nimicul deveni adevar. Isi ingrijea pacientii si, fara sa-si dea seama, nu se mai preocupa de viata si de moarte…
Cand se intoarse la Nan-in, batranul maestru se multumi sa zambeasca.
